How Can Dieters Be Successful?
Nine Tips to Ensure That You Actually Lose Weight
Have you ever tried going on a diet and then ultimately abandoning it after a week or two? If you answered yes, don’t fret, you’re not alone. Most dieters actually have a difficult time trying to follow their diet plans. But then, there are also those who have been really successful at keeping off the extra weight, and at the same time enjoying their new lifestyle. These nine factors are essential to losing weight.
1. Determination: Successful anything depends on determination. As in all other aspects of life, only people who are determined to succeed will reach their goals. In dieting, being determined means treating your goal of losing weight with the appropriate amount of seriousness. Dieting isn’t about foregoing cake and ice cream; it is a personal and potentially life changing endeavor. It should be approached the same way we approach other life changes, such as obtaining a degree, starting a new job, or committing to a relationship.
2. Set Reasonable Goals. The secret in keeping yourself enthusiastic about your diet is by creating a list of desired goals. How many pounds do you intend to lose in a week? Which dresses would you like to wear again? Your goals should be realistic. Don’t set goals that require you to do the impossible!
3. Don’t Crash Diet. The way to change your body is to change the way you live. Crash diets don’t work because they are roller coasters, and what goes up must come down. Furthermore, temporary “starvation” solutions can make you miserable, which will make it hard for others to be around you, and will result in just ensuring that you hate dieting!
4. Do Watch what you eat. Instead, change your eating habits. Cut down on your calorie and carbohydrate intake. Pick healthier alternatives, and eat smaller portions of the “good stuff” less frequently. Make sure you eat nutritiously.
5. Don’t Obsess About Food! Get involved with other things (work, relationships, projects, hobbies). A serious dieter will make a lifestyle change, and if your lifestyle revolves around eating, you should fill those hours with something else. Instead of looking forward to meals, look forward to other things.
6. Avoid Being an Emotional Eater. Don’t eat because you feel lonely, depressed, or tired. And don’t make yourself emotional by denying yourself all pleasure that comes from eating. Instead, work into your diet schedule reasonable rewards for when you’ve otherwise done what you set out to do. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Avoid overeating, binging, and mindless munching.
7. Exercise Regularly. Find substitute activities to get you out of your chair and off the couch. Find an active hobby or sport you enjoy. Just like dieting, exercise should be fun even without the reward of weight loss. Exercising can be a lot of different things. Take a kickboxing class, a water aerobic workout, swing lessons, or intramural sports. Find something you like doing!
8. Hold Yourself Accountable. It is your responsibility to make sure you are sticking to your diet, but that doesn’t mean others can’t help you. Let the people around you know that you’re on a diet and clarify the importance of your goals and your commitment to your new lifestyle. People will encourage and support you if you really want them to. Some people also find it helpful to hire a trainer or get involved with a program so that professionals in exercise and nutrition can hold them accountable and give them useful advice.
9. Believe in Yourself!. Whatever diet you plan to adopt, know and believe that you can do it! If you don’t have the belief that you can lose weight, all the diet “planning” in the world can’t help you.
